What is Zakat and how is it calculated?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It requires Muslims who possess a certain amount of wealth beyond their basic needs and debts to give a portion of it to those in need.
This threshold is called Nisab, which is commonly calculated based on gold. When a full lunar year passes over the Zakatable wealth, one-fortieth (2.5%) is given as Zakat.
Cash, gold, silver, trade goods, and collectible receivables are included in the calculation, while due debts are deducted.
The Zakat Calculator page on our website provides an estimated amount. For rulings specific to your situation, we recommend consulting a religious scholar.
